What Did DART Do? NASA's Asteroid-Smasher and Its Paparazzo Companion
Last September 26th, the Double Asteroid Redirection Test spacecraft deliberately crashed into a small asteroid, Dimorphos. The DART mission was investigating a possible technique for moving asteroids, perhaps useful someday for "planetary defense" if a threatening object is ever discovered. An Italian spacecraft, LICIACube, accompanied DART, snapping pictures of its final moments and the messy plume of its aftermath. Bill Higgins examines the mission plan and the spectacular results.
